All calculations, goals, and metrics in Threshold are for educational purposes only and should not be taken as investment or financial advice.
Use these steps to answer common questions with your Threshold data.
“What's my net worth?”
Add the built-in Net Worth calculation. It automatically totals all your assets minus all liabilities across connected accounts.
How: In Build mode, tap + → Calculation → Net Worth. It appears in the Calculations section.
“How much am I actually spending each month?”
Add the Monthly Margin calculation. It shows your income minus spending. A positive number means you spent less than you earned. Open the calculation after adding it to choose a time window. Use “Last Month” for one month or “Last 3 Months” for an average across three months.
How: In Build mode, tap + → Calculation → Monthly Margin. Then tap the calculation card to adjust the time window.
“Am I saving enough?”
Add the Savings Rate calculation. It shows what percentage of your income you're keeping rather than spending. Threshold reports your actual rate without setting a target for you.
How: In Build mode, tap + → Calculation → Savings Rate. Adjust the time window after adding it.
“How much do I have in retirement accounts right now?”
Create a group called “Retirement” and add all your IRAs and 401(k)s to it. The group shows their combined balance.
How: In Build mode, tap + → Group → name it “Retirement” → Create Group. Select the retirement accounts during setup, or open the group later and use Edit Group → Add Accounts.
“Am I on track for retirement?”
Use the built-in Retirement Goal. Set your retirement year, birth year, annual spending target, assumed return rate, and withdrawal rate. Link your retirement accounts. Threshold projects your balance at retirement and shows an On Track / At Risk / Off Track status.
How: In Build mode, tap + → Goal → Retirement Goal→ follow the three-screen setup wizard → link your retirement accounts on screen two → enter your assumptions on screen three.
“Is my emergency fund big enough?”
Create a custom goal for your emergency fund and choose a target. Use Monthly Margin if you want to compare the target with average monthly spending. Then link your savings account.
How: Add a Monthly Margin calculation first to see your monthly spend. Then, in Build mode, tap + → Goal → Custom Goal. Set your target, create the goal, then link your HYSA or savings account.
“How long would my savings last if I lost income?”
Build a custom calculation: emergency fund balance ÷ average monthly spending. The result is months of coverage and appears in the Calculations section alongside your other metrics.
How: In Build mode, tap + → Calculation → + Create Custom Calculation. In the formula builder, select your savings account balance as the first operand, ÷ as the operator, and Spending (Last 3 Months) as the second operand. Use the Number result format.
“How much of my checking is actually available for spending?”
Split checking into portions for fixed expenses, an emergency buffer, and discretionary spending. The Discretionary portion shows its share of the current balance.
How: Tap your checking account to open its detail sheet → Split Account→ create portions for Rent, Bills, Discretionary → assign percentages. Threshold tracks each one as a named share of the account.
“What's my total credit card balance across all cards?”
Create a group called “Credit Cards” and add all your credit card accounts to it. The group shows the total owed across all cards, live.
How: In Build mode, tap + → Group → name it “Credit Cards” → Create Group. Select the credit card accounts during setup, or add them later from Edit Group.
“How are my assets and liabilities broken out?”
Build a group for “Assets” (checking, savings, investments) and a group for “Liabilities” (credit cards, loans). Their groups show separate subtotals alongside Net Worth.
How: Create two groups and select the relevant accounts for each. Both appear in the Groups section.
“What's my monthly cash flow after fixed expenses?”
Split checking into Fixed and Discretionary portions. Add Monthly Margin to compare income with spending.
How: Split your checking via Split Account in the account detail sheet. Then, in Build mode, tap + → Calculation → Monthly Margin. The calculation appears in Calculations, while the portion remains tied to its account or group.
