Connected Accounts (Plaid)
Last updated: August 13, 2026
When you connect a bank through Plaid, Threshold syncs your account balances, transaction history, and available investment holdings.
What syncs
- Account name and institution
- Current balance
- Up to 24 months of transaction history
- Transaction details: amount, date, merchant name, category
Threshold does not sync account numbers, routing numbers, or login credentials. Plaid handles all bank authentication directly.
Investment holdings
For brokerage, retirement, and other investment accounts, Threshold syncs the positions inside the account as well as its total balance. Each holding can include:
- Ticker symbol and security name
- Security type (equity, ETF, mutual fund, cash, and so on)
- Quantity of shares or units held
- Price per share and total market value
- Cost basis, and the resulting gain or loss in dollars and percent
These positions power the Investments section, which shows your top holding, total invested value, and positions across connected brokerages. For details, see The Investments section.
Your brokerage reports holdings through Plaid. Prices reflect the most recent values your institution shared, not live market prices.
How balances stay fresh
Threshold shows cached balances immediately so the canvas loads quickly. It checks freshness and automatically refreshes stale account data when the canvas loads.
Bank data is not a live ticker, so a recent transfer or payment may take time to reach Plaid and then Threshold.
Account types and tagging
Each connected account is automatically tagged based on what Plaid reports:
- Asset or liability: Checking, savings, and investment accounts are assets. Credit cards and loans are liabilities. This determines how they count in calculations like Net Worth.
- Account class: Checking, savings, credit card, brokerage, loan, etc.
- Retirement type: If applicable: Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, 401(k), etc.
These tags are set automatically based on what Plaid reports. You can edit them from the account's detail sheet using Edit tags.
Reconnecting
A bank connection may need to be refreshed after a password change or when the institution requires another authentication. Threshold shows an error next to that bank on the home screen.
Tap it to go through Plaid's re-link flow. Your account data and canvas organization stay in place. This only reauthorizes the existing connection.
