Adding projections to goals

All calculations, goals, and metrics in Threshold are for educational purposes only and should not be taken as investment or financial advice.
A goal tracks progress toward a target. A projectionestimates whether you will reach that target by its date using the current balance and expected contributions.
What a projection is
A projection uses the current balance, target amount, target date, expected monthly contribution, and expected annual return. It estimates the value on the target date, then reports a status and the difference from your target.
Retirement goals include one automatically
Retirement goals come with a projection already attached. As soon as you create a retirement goal, Threshold estimates your progress toward your target date. Custom and savings goals track current progress by default. You can add a projection to either one.
Adding a projection to a custom goal
- On the canvas, tap the goal once to open its detail sheet.
- Tap Add projectionon the goal's detail sheet.
- Enter Target Balance, Expected Annual Return, and Monthly Contribution. Threshold updates the projected value and gap as you change the inputs.
- Tap Save.
After you save, the goal's detail sheet shows your projected value, a status, and the gap between that projection and your target. You can reopen the projection to update your inputs. The status updates when you save.
What the status means
Threshold compares your projected value to your target and assigns one of three statuses:
On Track
Your projected value meets or exceeds your target. At your current pace and assumptions, you're expected to reach the goal by its target date.
At Risk
Your projected value is less than 15% below your target.
Off Track
Your projected value falls more than about 15% below your target. At your current pace, you're not expected to reach the goal by its target date.
The gapis the difference between your projected value and your target. A positive gap means you're projected to come out ahead; a negative gap shows how far short you're expected to land. A projection needs a target date and at least one linked account to produce a status. Without them, Threshold reports that it needs more information.
Adjusting your goal
If a goal is At Risk or Off Track, you can change your Monthly Contribution, Expected Annual Returnassumption, extend your target date, or link more accounts to the goal so its balance reflects everything you're actually saving. To change linked accounts, open the goal, tap its menu, choose Edit Goal, and update the Linked Accounts toggles. Each change recalculates the projection.
