Manual Accounts

Last updated: August 13, 2026

Create a manual account for an asset or liability that Plaid does not report, such as a crypto wallet, employer stock, a car, real estate, or an informal loan.

When to use a manual account

  • Cryptocurrency: Plaid doesn't connect to most crypto exchanges. Add a manual account and update the balance when it changes meaningfully.
  • Employer stock: Equity held in a corporate portal that Plaid can't connect to.
  • Property or vehicles: If you want to track a car or home as an asset, create a manual account with an estimated value.
  • Loans from friends or family: Informal debts you want to track as a liability.
  • Unsupported institutions: If your bank isn't available through Plaid, a manual account is the fallback.

Creating a manual account

  1. In Build mode, tap + Connect Account Link account manually.
  2. Give it a name (e.g., “Coinbase” or “Car”).
  3. Enter the current balance.
  4. Tag it as an asset or liability so it counts correctly in calculations like Net Worth.

Updating the balance

Manual account balances do not update automatically. Tap the account on the canvas to open its detail sheet, then edit the balance.

Update it on the schedule that works for you, such as weekly or after a meaningful change.

Manual accounts work like any other account

Once created, a manual account behaves much like a Plaid-connected account. You can add it to a group through Edit Group, link it to a goal through goal setup or Edit Goal, split it into portions, and include it in calculations. The main difference is that you manage the balance yourself.

A manual account holds one balance and does not track individual investment positions. It does not appear as ticker-by-ticker positions or in the Investments section. Tracking individual positions requires a Plaid-connected investment account. See Connected Accounts.
