Linking Accounts and Portions to Goals

All calculations, goals, and metrics in Threshold are for educational purposes only and should not be taken as investment or financial advice.

Linking is how you tell a goal which balances count toward its progress. You select the accounts, and Threshold sums their balances against the target. If you haven't set up a goal yet, start with Creating your first goal.

Linking a whole account

Open the goal, tap its menu, choose Edit Goal, and use the Linked Accountstoggles. The full balance of each linked account contributes to the goal's progress.

Linking a portion

If you've split an account into portions, you can link a specific portion to a goal instead of the whole account. For example, link a “Hawaii Fund” portion (20% of checking) to a travel goal rather than counting the entire checking balance.

A split account can only be linked through its portions. If you try to link the parent account directly, Threshold will prompt you to add an individual portion instead.

Multiple accounts, one goal

Custom and retirement goals can link multiple eligible asset accounts. Their balances are summed. This is useful when money for one goal is spread across a savings account and a brokerage account.

One account, multiple goals

An asset account can be linked to multiple custom or retirement goals. If your HYSA is linked to both an emergency fund goal and a vacation goal, the full balance counts toward each one independently.

If you want different goals to track different parts of the same account, split it into portions first, then link each portion to the appropriate goal.

Custom goals use assets

A custom goal tracks eligible asset accounts and portions. Credit cards and loans belong in debt paydown goals instead.

Each debt paydown goal links one liability

A debt paydown goal tracks one debt shrinking toward $0, so it accepts one liability account. If you try to add an asset, Threshold will tell you that assets can't be used in a debt paydown goal and ask you to add a liability instead.

When you link a liability to a debt goal, Threshold snapshots a baselineequal to the amount owed when you link it. Progress measures how far the balance has fallen from that baseline toward $0, so the paydown you see reflects what's happened since you linked the account, not its entire history. A debt goal does not need a separate dollar target.

Unlinking

Open the goal, tap its menu, choose Edit Goal, and turn off the relevant account or portion. The underlying account is unaffected. A completed debt goal's linked liability is fixed; create a new debt goal if you want to track a different card or loan.
