Splitting an Account into Portions
Last updated: August 13, 2026
The problem portions solve
Portions divide one account into named shares without moving money. For example, you can divide savings among an emergency fund, vacation, and a down payment without opening separate bank accounts.
How to split an account
- Tap the account on the canvas to open its detail sheet.
- Tap “Split.”
- Create 2–5 portions, each with a name and a percentage.
- The percentages must add up to 100%. Threshold enforces this as you configure them.
An example
Say your savings account has $20,000 and you split it into three portions:
| Portion | Percentage | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency Fund | 50% | $10,000 |
| Vacation | 10% | $2,000 |
| Down Payment | 40% | $8,000 |
Threshold tracks each portion as a named share of the account. The parent account still owns and shows the full $20,000 balance.
Dynamic updates
Portions update proportionally when the account balance changes. If you deposit $5,000 and the balance goes to $25,000, the portions automatically become:
- Emergency Fund: $12,500 (50%)
- Vacation: $2,500 (10%)
- Down Payment: $10,000 (40%)
Threshold recalculates each portion from its percentage.
What you can do with portions
- Add them to groups: Open a group, choose Edit Group, and use Add Portions.
- Link them to goals: Instead of linking a whole account to a goal, link just the relevant portion. For example, link a “Hawaii Fund” portion to a travel goal.
- Include them in calculations: Use a portion's balance as an operand in a custom calculation.
What portions are not
Portions are a visual and math overlay. They do not create separate bank accounts, and they do not move money. Your bank sees one account with one balance. Portions exist only in Threshold.
Changing or removing portions
Open the account's detail sheet and tap “Split” again to edit portion names and percentages. To remove all portions and go back to a single account, tap any portion, open the menu, and select “Merge back to single account.” Any groups or goals that referenced a portion will need to be updated.
